2022.01.26 11:46 gooeymoon Dear managers: PLEASE listen to your employees when they try to tell you that they feel uncomfortable.
I (20F) am extremely disappointed in the actions taken by managers I've had at various jobs when I try to tell them that either a customer or even, on occasion, a fellow employee, has made me uncomfortable. It makes me sad, it makes me feel sort of helpless knowing that the person who is supposed to be MANAGING this workplace can't even stick up for the people who are literally working for them and dedicating their time to keep an establishment running.
There is one customer who comes into our shop every single day, let's call him Bob. He is a man in his 60s or 70s and normally he is nice to every single person who works there. He orders the same thing every day, and we even hand-deliver his food to his table for him so he doesn't have to walk back over to the counter for him. I started just a few weeks ago, and every single time I have been at the register when Bob comes in, he is extremely rude to me and always tries to pick fights with me. I like to think I'm pretty good at my job, not in a conceited way, but I always try my best to help customers the best I can and I'm very respectful. Well, Bob lashes out at me every time he comes in, disrupts the other customers waiting/sitting and eating, and my manager is never there to witness it. Nobody is, really, because I'm usually alone out there while my manager is in the back office. The past two days have been the worst, Monday Bob actually waved his hand in my face and told me to "stop speaking" and "shut up" when I asked him if he would like medium or dark roast coffee, and loudly said "I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, MISS", I'm assuming so everything there would think I was the one giving him a hard time. The same thing happened yesterday and I couldn't take it anymore, so after I was finished helping the customer after Bob, I went back to my manager and told her what happened and that it was making me very uncomfortable. She merely replied "well, that doesn't sound like him", and when I tried to ask her if I could take a breather outside for a few minutes, she replied, "I mean, if you really need to, but you'll have to wait for me to clock in first." She had been there for almost an HOUR.
I approached her again later to discuss this (and actually secretly recorded it on my phone in case she started giving me trouble), and this is how it went:
Me: So, I wanted to talk to you about the situation with Bob earlier.
Me: I just want you to know that I felt really uncomfortable, he does this every time he comes in, and he doesn't do it to anyone else who's on register. I know how that sounds, I know it sounds like I'm trying to make it all about me but- (manager cuts me off)
Manager: Well, what I'M trying to tell you is that he's probably just having a bad day. He probably just has something going on.
Me: But, he does this every single time he comes in and I have to wait on him, so it's most likely not just him having a bad day. And even if it is, that's no excuse. It just makes me extremely uncomfortable, and it goes wayyyy above being rude, like to the point of him disrupting the customers who are waiting to order or who are sitting and eating. It's not just uncomfortable for me, it's uncomfortable for everyone.
Manager: Well, I'll keep an eye on it.
Me: He does this when nobody is around, so I doubt he would do it when a manager is out there too. I want to ask if maybe I could grab someone else to help him when he comes in, and I could go back to register after, because I just feel so extremely uncomfortable helping him, especially since I'm a pretty small girl and he's actually physically waved his hand close to my face before.
Manager: Well, there are people in our day-to-day lives that we don't like to see, but we just have to deal with it. You don't get an exception.
And it pretty much just ended there. I'm off work today because of an appointment, but I'm dreading going back there tomorrow because I know I'll probably have to help Bob again and get shit on by him, and my manager probably won't do anything about it. Any managers out there, PLEASE take your employees seriously when they ask you for help or tell you that something in that work environment is making them uncomfortable. With all the places desperate for employyes right now, I can't understand how someone would treat their employyes like this and then be surprised when they're left without any.
