2022.01.26 11:55 Myotis Issues with Dolby Vision and sound from SSE
I'm having two issues with my setup that I hope someone could help with. I've only seen one or two mentions of the same problem in searching around the net that were not really helpful.
First issue is that my Shield refuses to detect Dolby Vision through my Shockwafe Pro 7.1.4. If I bypass the Naka and go straight to my TV, DV plays fine, but following Nakamichi's recommended setup, I can't enable it on my Shield.
I reached out to Nakamichi support last week and they recommended that I change HDMI cables. I bought a few of their recommended cables and nothing changed.
The other issue is something I haven't seen anyone mention before. I'm noticing in testing the sound with any SSE setting, particularly with Atmos soundtracks, when the movie starts playing the sound is much less detailed vs if I start a movie, the soundbar starts playing sound, I change from SSE 2 to SSE 3 and back to SSE 2, there is SOO much more detail in the sound.
It's really evident in the beginning of Mad Max Fury Road where after Max eats the lizard and starts up his car. There is much richer sound of his engine starting up and spinning. If I just let the movie play from start, without changing this setting, the sound is much more muted from the engine, however every other sound seems to play fine. If I skip around the movie or pause it and play again, the soundbar goes back to that muted sound. I'll have to switch the SSE settings again to get the more detailed sound again.
I'll only get richer sound if I first let the soundbar start to play the sound from that initial play and change the SSE settings from one to the other or even back.
Has anybody ever experienced these probs before?

2022.01.26 11:55 Bgitmarie John D
I’m becoming more and more irritated with episodes where Deloney is a host. I think he often jumps to the wildest conclusions, I don’t appreciate his sense of humor and find his voice & tone ingenue. Dave being such a straight shooter and right to the point in calls where the speaker is giving excess and unnecessary information John gets too caught up in the fluff for my liking and it makes it hard to listen. At this point I just skip entire episodes if I hear his voice in the intro.

2022.01.26 11:55 jigglysquishy Translations and currency conversion in Film. Mild spoilers for "A Hero"
I just watched the Iranian film "A Hero" (fantastic btw) and the main character is in jail for a debt of "70,000". I don't know how much that converts to from Iranian Rial so I looked it up. It's only $2 Canadian? Obviously he's not in jail for such a small sum of money. Now, I'm assuming in the translation to English they converted to American currency, but I can't confirm anywhere. But it seems a bit weird to convert it but not actually say it. I could even get behind it including the original sum with a converted sum in brackets.
What are your thoughts on including a currency conversion as part of a translation?

2022.01.26 11:55 RancerDS Building Backwards (Deck Construction Theory, Pt. 4)
DISCLAIMER: Going to discuss very basic to much more advanced principles of deck-construction for Arena. Everything within this series is MY OPINION. Yet peppered with some facts to help give insight to those who might be able to use it one day.
Imagine building your deck backwards. Literally.
The very last card in your deck will be worthless if it is a creature (having no abilities) that has summoning sickness, except for use as a blocker. If your opponent has 1 life left and that last card doesn't take it from him, it's basically having no effect on improving your chance to win.
So what is the least valuable card in your deck?
If you'd answered it's a basic land, you are right. If you've got 23 lands in play and you draw that last one as your final card in the deck, chances are it'll do diddly-squat for aiding your game-play. Considering this, you might conclude that basic lands should be the last 2-3 cards you'd want for your final draws. And rationally, it makes sense.
Yet you want at least 2-3 land cards in your opening hand. Maybe 4 or 5. If you know that, then you can experiment with what cards and how many are sandwiched in between.
If you want to "curve out", to where you cast a spell on each turn you'd played a land, you'd want lands to come up 50% of the time.
Having 50% land in your deck is the best chance of insuring this. Yet you'll find that about 40% will be almost as effective. Or maybe even 33% if you'd compiled a deck using the cheapest and most beneficial spells.
Going to compare two different cards here now. They are Snakeskin Veil and Raise Dead. Both require that you have a creature on the battlefield at some point.... and the latter requires it to go to your graveyard first. Except that some cards end up being exiled from the battlefield and/or graveyard. So the Veil gets a pat on the back for preventing it from ever leaving the battlefield from targeted direct-damage, destruction spell, an Unsummon or even being perpetually tapped. By having prevented it from leaving the battlefield (via "hex-proof"), then you don't have to use your mana to cast that creature again on a later turn. Bear in mind it gave you a +1/+1 to boot!
Because of this, you could say that you'd want your death raising card(s) to be much later in your deck [and maybe less frequent] than your hex-proof(s). So you have 2 hexproofs versus a death-raiser.
Using this method, you've already decided you wanted 3 lands at the back of the deck, 5 at the front and three other cards plus at least a creature... for a total of twelve. That's 20% of your 60-card deck right there!!!
Hopefully, you can see where using a card is good enough to justify having one in a deck. While you decide what other things you want/need more. Yet first looking at what you want to see coming AFTER other cards have came into play.
Dual lands and equipment are excellent examples of being more desirable as either early vs. late plays.
